Last week I posted a picture of the scarf I had just finished on facebook and several of you asked for the pattern. Can I just tell you that I could not have made this scarf at a better time? We literally went from record highs to a high of 61° in one day. Crazy Colorado weather!
I’m not exactly a crochet lingo expert and I actually followed a pattern on the inside of a yarn ball so I’ll include photos!
For this scarf I used the following:
3 rolls of Bernat Softee Chunky yarn in the color natural. You can use any yarn, but to look like the one pictured above you’ll want to make sure that it is ‘bulky’.
Size N hook
This scarf works lengthwise.
- Chain 133.
- 1st row: 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. 1 hdc in each ch across. Turn. 133 hdc.
- 2nd row: ch 2 (doesn’t count as hdc). Work 1 hdc into horizontal bar from stitches in the row below.
- Repeat 2nd row until you are at 6″, the width you prefer or until you are out of yarn.
What in the world is the horizontal bar stitch from the row below?
This photo points to the spot where you would normally just yarn through with your hdc.
This next photo shows that you only yarn through ONE thread of the horizontal bar.
So, just yarn through the one piece (the bar) that is circled. And continue this throughout the pattern. You’ll see how it makes the pattern so beautiful after a few stitches. Because you take the one bar, it forces the other two to “lean” to the backside.
It is so beautiful and it was so very easy to make. I’m thinking I need to make one of these in every color! They don’t take very long to make either, once you get the hang of it. I might even make a few for gifts to maybe teachers, or something.
Now I need to learn how to make matching beanies!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Let me know if you have any questions or I can make the instruction any more clear.
Before you run out and buy your yarn, be sure to check the online deals! I know that holidays are coming up so most craft stores are getting ready by cleaning out and stocking up. There are some good deals to be found.

WOW, this scarf is GORGEOUS! I almost want to say that the “bar” that you reference is called a post, but it’s kind of hard to tell…..
At any rate, I’m adding this to my list of things to make (I’m thinking of who would like to have this for a Christmas gift…..hehe!).
Thanks for posting it!
