Okay, now that you know about coupons and where to find coupons, what are you supposed to do with them?
Being organized with your coupons is probably the most difficult and time consuming part of couponing. It is also where once very motivated people jump off the couponing cliff into full-price shopping again (L. Eleana? Mom?). Don’t fret, once you get the hang of it it will take you no time at all.
There are a lot of different ways people choose to keep their coupons organized. Some have a binder, some have a file folder, some have an index card box and some use envelopes. I…… have a hybrid version, but I’ll tell you more about that in a few minutes.
This post revolves around grocery coupons mainly. For all other coupons, it’s easy. When I find a coupon for a restaurant, or car wash, or haircuts I have a file folder that I stick those in. That file folder isn’t terribly organized, it’s a catch-all. Easy-peasy. When I need an “all other” coupon I know right where to go. I clean it out about once a month too to remove the expirees.
First things first: To clip or not to clip? Some couponers clip every coupon that comes their way. Some clip the ones they know they will use, and toss the rest. Some clip the ones they know they will use and the ones they will use if a good deal comes along. The answer really depends on how you decide to organize your coupons so let me tell you about my method of couponing madness…
I clip the coupons that I know I am going to use no matter what. I also clip the coupons that I could potentially use if the price is right. This is efficient because I don’t have to spend a ton of time on clipping coupons that will never be used! On printables: I print the coupons I will use and might use because sometimes they go away fast and then I’m left without a coupon.
And then… I file away my newspaper inserts.
I keep the newspaper inserts for about 3 months and recycle them. Why do I keep them you ask? Well, young grasshoppa every now and then a deal comes around that makes toothpaste, deodorant, shave gel, pasta… free. So when that deal comes around for a brand that I didn’t clip previously, I will refer back to my newspaper inserts and clip those so I can get in on the free stuff. If it’s for a brand that I don’t use, I still do the deal so I can get some items for donation. Important note here, I am a couponer however, I do not stand by emptying the shelves on a killer deal. See the long-term effects of extreme couponing here.
Just for reference, each newspaper insert has it’s name and date on the fold (spine). For instance, RedPlum 12/25/10 or SmartSource 12/25/10. This enables you to find the insert in the stack of inserts easily.
After all the clipping and printing I file them away. I use an expandable sorter like the one below although not nearly as sexy. I file my coupons under 10 different headings such as Baking, Bread, Beverages, Health and Beauty, Cleaning and Paper Goods, Snacks, Meat, Dairy and so on…
In the front of my coupon holder I have three envelopes. One for each of the stores that I frequent. When I am making my list, I pull the coupon for that item and place it in the envelope per store. If I happen to be shopping and find an item that wasn’t on my list, I pull that coupon and stick it in the envelope. Another thing, I’m kind of anal so I actually have a floating envelope for the “I-have-an-awesome-coupon-but-don’t-see-this-item-in-the-ad” case. Those items are also on my list with a * noting that it’s a maybe – IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT! If the price is right I put that coupon in the store envelope. If not, I file it away under the correct heading.
This system works awesome for me because at checkout I just pull out my handy-dandy envelope and pass over the coupons. I know that every couponer probably has their own way. For the seasoned couponers, I would love to hear your system and method of organizing.
Up tomorrow: How to use coupons.

Your system is similar to mine, although I don’t save inserts. I cut out anything I’d buy if it were free and of course all the items I normally buy. Our coupon organizers are a bit similar. I wrote a guest post over at Fantabulously Frugal (http://fantabulouslyfrugal.com/2010/09/guest-post-magaging-your-grocery-coupons/) explaining my system. I have never had a problem with this coupon system.
And right now I’m kicking myself for not being able to link you to my own blog
oh well, what can ya do?
Great series Jiill!
Hi, I came across your blog while trying to get info on the Cinch diet book, and I have become interested in your couponing blogs instead.
I’ve always used coupons but not consistently and I would like to really see how much I can save. I live in San Antonio, Tx and usually do my grocery shopping at HEB. If you could find me someone like Carrie in Colorado to help me along that would be great!
Sonia, I LOVE IT! Yes, let me get back to you with a deal blogger for HEB. Welcome to the club.
Hi Sonia, I found a blogger that does deals for HEB! Check out Southern Savers here.
I just write the date on the front of the insert and file it away in a filing crate I have next to my desk with months of the year on the tabs. Then, as I make my shopping list, if I see that my favorite online coupon matcher-upper has indicated a great deal with the coupon, I can find it fairly easily. I also have my ex-MIL and my dad save coupon inserts for me. Then I have multiple coupons. But I heartily agree that clearing the shelves of a great deal is BAD KARMA behavior!
I just stumbled across your website when trying to find a better way to organize my coupons. Can you find me a blogger for bradenton, fl? Thanks! (:
Hi Brittani! Which grocery store(s) do you shop at specifically?
Mainly publix, sweet bay and winn dixie. Thank you so much!
Hi Brittani! Jenny at Southern Savers does Publix and Sweetbay so she is probably your best bet!
For Winn Dixie you can check out the list here at BeCentsAble.
Have fun couponing!!

I came across your website looking for couponing information. I have seached the internest front to back and can’t seem to find the correct websites to use for printable coupons. The websites I come across have like 5-10 grocery coupons and the rest is for retail stores and resturants. Can you point me in the direction to the websites I read about and see on “Extreme Couponing” where people print grocery coupons out. I also wanted to know if you could help me out in understanding why people get so much product to get it free. How is this done? I would love to be good a couponing but don’t really understand how it is all done.
Thanks for your time and help,
Shelly

Hello, can you please help me find a blogger and a coupon site in Houston, TX? I shop at Kroger, Mi Tienda/HEB and Food Town.
I am pretty new at couponing, and am having fun with it! I found your organizing system very helpful. I am in northern Mi. If you do now of someone in this area! Thx so much’
Great to hear. I have my feelers out for a deal blogger in your area.
hey Jill. I used the link that you shared above to find a blogger for the saratoga springs, NY area price chopper, but BJs wasnt listed and wanted yo know if you could find a blogger for there and maybe another for Price Chopper! Thanks!
Hey Logan, I have been unable to find a deal blogger in the NY area.
Much of the time a chain like that runs similar deals in other areas. Price Chopper is kind of a big chain, right? Maybe look in another state that you know they are in? I know they are in Missouri, but not sure if their sales would be the same as in NY.
Would you know of a blogger near Traverse City, Mi? I usually shop at meijer, Rics, or Toms Market. Thank you!
Hi Pat, There are several bloggers in MI that do Meijer. I don’t see Ric’s or Tom’s though. Here is the link… http://www.becentsable.net/2009/02/michigan-grocery-deals.html/
I’m in new york (very expensive) and shop at stop and shop, key food and met food. Any help with on a grocery deal blogger for these supermarkets. Thanks!
I am just starting out. I don’t really know what im doing. I have three kids and just trying to learn to save money. I live in Porterville. I shop in Bakersfield or Visalia at Savemart or Win Co. Thank you for you help. I love your site.
Cynthia, I finally found a blogger that does Savemart deals in Northern CA!! The deals for this week are posted here… http://myfrugaladventures.com/2011/12/savemart-and-luckys-deals-1228-0103/
I’m still on the hunt for Winco.
I found someone that does Winco, but they are in Idaho so not sure if the ads are the same? http://fabulesslyfrugal.com/category/winco
Word on the webz is that Winco is kind of inconsistent with pricing and ads so not many people do them, but hope this helps!!
