Cheekbones and Clavicles – Medifast Week 2: Weight loss is mental

by Jill on June 11, 2012

Jill Bender(After my 5.5 mile walk on Sunday. Whoop!)

Below is a conversation Jonesie and I had when I picked him up from his weekend at dad’s house Sunday night.

Jonesie:  Are you still on your diet?

Me: Yes.

Jonesie: OMG, still? How long are you going to do it for?

That conversation right there is because I haven’t been able to stick to anything for more than a week. I had mixed emotions on that one. YAY, I’m actually doing it and/or DANG, have I been that bad? For the moment, I’m going with Yay! *clicking heels

My friends, I have stuck to Medifast and I am now on week 3. Three, tres, trois. To be exact.

I’ve decided that weight loss is more mental than physical. I mean your body is taking the brunt of the adjustments when you begin any type of weight loss, right? It’s like “what the hell is this clear and refreshing liquid you are drowning me in?” and “what is with all of this nourishment; this leafy green substance every day?” and “you want to walk the stairs, why? There is an elevator over there you know.” Groan, creek, snap, crackle and pop.

WRONG! In my world, it’s totally my brain that is going haywire.

If you follow me on twitter or facebook you know that I am working  my ass off (because I post pictures every few minutes while I’m powering through a walk). I did almost three hours of yard work on Saturday. Including, but not limited to, blowing out the winter leftovers from my garage, blowing leaves out of my rocks, spraying weeds, trimming two bushes, threatening my teenager to take away his phone if he didn’t get the top part of the bush, and cleaning it all up. And I felt so good when I woke up on Sunday that I went for a walk. I pushed myself and went 5.5 miles. I even ran the last stretch. So the tally is 22 miles in two weeks! Not bad for a rookie, eh.

Last week I was so excited to share that I had lost two pounds and that for sure the next week would be better because my body is always a week behind. Well, I’m not sure what the  deal is, but the scale hasn’t  moved. Not even a hair!

“Shut the front door” you say!

“I know, right?!” I say.

I am, however, losing inches. (Three to be exact.) My jeans are not squeezing the life out of me and I am starting to feel a shape starting to…. well, take shape. But this isn’t good enough. I want the scale to move!!

Medifast couldn’t make the plan any easier for me to follow. Each workday morning I plan out my food day, pack my meals and off I go. No pre-planning. No measuring. No chopping. Just packing. I’ve found that I really gravitate to grabbing the bars and shakes because they are SO easy! And the one lean and green meal each day has been much easier than I thought too.

Confession: I’m not sure we’ve ever gone through all of the veggies I buy when I go on one of my diet kicks. You know the whole run to the store and fill your basket with healthy food, and then not eat all of it type? That’s me. That WAS me.

So, the scale ain’t budging, but that only makes my resolve to make it move even stronger. See! It’s a mental game and my brain is going to win. But that’s cool though because my body totally gains the benefit; long, lean muscles, strong cheekbones, visible clavicle, arms that deserve to be wearing a tank top and legs that beg for shorts. By the way, there is a hint of cheekbone in that photo above, yeah? RIGHT?

You try living in my head for a few days…

The battle wages on. How are you doing?

You are SO right. It’s all in our heads. I need to start saying, “I can’t lose 5-10-40-50 lbs” and start saying “I can.”

Heck, I’m at this one lb at a time. I start walking 15 minutes. Then it began to grow to doing my first 10k! And you know my bike ride story from last year? I’m NOT going there again. ;)

You’re doing great – just keep with it. Sometimes there will be a week of no loss, and then a huge slide on the scale.

However – remember – this isn’t a “diet”. :) It’s a change of life!

I know it’s not a diet, it’s just that “change of life” sounds so… menopause-ish. I’m banking all of my mental sanity that this is the week the scale is gonna slide! Thanks for the support.

I think it’s mental, too, and you’re doing such a great job! (The scale will catch up.)

Thanks! Behind closed doors (offline) it’s definitely more difficult. Sharing the struggles online and getting so much amazing support sure helps. It’s a definite testament to why a group helps!

you are in the infamous 3rd week stall. it will pass, just keep doing what you are doing. Make sure you are not overdoing the exercise though!

I’ve actually wondered if I’m getting too much exercise in the first few weeks… waiting on the answer.

I have always said that you commit to lose weight when you want the weight loss more than you want the food. I have also been right where you are in terms of working hard and not seeing the scale budge. SO FRUSTRATING. But it does budge eventually. The thing is to stay committed until it does.

I lost 10 lbs earlier this year and was horrified to see that they were back. (Nevermind that I needed to lose another 40 on top of the 10.) I was working w/ a chiropractor as a coach at the time, but just cannot afford it now. So I’m on my own. Recommitted this week and am doing well so far. Am trying a meal replacement bar for the first time today. So far, no bad, although there’s a whole afternoon to go.

Keep it up, Jill, and I will, too!

It’s so frustrating not seeing the scale move. My best advice, listen to that crazy fish Dory from Finding Nemo and “Just keep swimming”. :) That scale will move, especially since you are following the eating plan and moving!
