Can you spare a few books? Or a kidney?

by Jill on January 8, 2012

MH900409270Hey friends, do you have a few books you’re looking to get rid of or getting ready to list on eBay? Could you spare a few?

My mom’s friend, Jill (YES, JILL) in New Hampshire is going through kidney dialysis due to her PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) and she just wants a few books to read during the time she is going through the procedure. From what I know dialysis is a long process that is needed on a frequent basis.

Her friends birthday is on Feb 7th so we were thinking we could get a little care package together of donated books and get them to her for her birthday?

Also, she is in desperate need of a kidney transplant so if you have ever considered donating and you are in the New Hampshire area and you have blood type A you could really change this woman’s life. icon smile

If you are interested in sending me a book or two or three contact me in the comment section or send me an e-mail and we can chat about getting those books to me!!

This would also be a perfect, PERFECT story for your weekly random act of kindness!!!

I have a few I would be willing to send. Do you know if she has a nook of any type? I can also lend her books through there. I am in colorado so would need to know where to mail the books to her.

Thank you

Wow! What a nice idea. I would love to donate some books. Just give me the details. I can’t give a kidney. I’m way down in Texas. :(

Hi. I just came across your blog when I was looking for new ways to make pasta salad. I’m type A but I live in Washington. I know it sounds crazy, but I’d like to hear more about the kidney donation requirements. I have a history of breast cancer but have been out of active treatment for just over a year now. Does that mean my kidney is still a viable candidate? Is being local a requirement? *and thanks for the pasta recipe too….Feel free to email me. Here’s hoping for the best outcome for your mom’s friend.

Hi Cindy! So thankful for that pasta salad post. :) Your comment brought me to tears. It’s so amazing that through your own struggles you have the strength and will to help others. Really! I don’t know much myself about living donors, but here is a website that has a boat load of helpful information. http://www.kidney.org/transplantation/livingDonors/info.cfm

If you are interested and a viable candidate there is very likely people in need that are in your area. Thank you so very much for your words.

What a great topic you started. I received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor. I was on the list for a little more than 17 months. In regards to Cindy about cancer, my transplant center requires 5 years cancer-free for recipients. Not sure about donors. How great of you to want to donate. I also know that you don’t have to be local. You can be tested at the center closest to you. I would like to send some books. I did dialysis for 3 years and hated it. I set up the internet on my cellphone to read stuff, etc. I wish I had had a Kindle at that time.

Hi Kathy, Thanks so much for the information! I am just so thankful for this opportunity to open up a dialogue about this subject. I know for me, there is just so much unkown and from the little research I did on dialysis for this particular post I know it requires much strength. I will send you an e-mail at some point today with details on books.

Thank you for the information. It looks like I need to wait for a little more time to pass. I have often wondered about living organ donation, so Jill – your family’s traditional pasta recipe allowed you to bring me more awareness about the requirements of organ donation. Thank you! I would love to hear more about the books she enjoys. I recently purged my book shelves, but if I have something in her genre, I’d be happy to send it along.

You said New Hampshire; that is right near me! I like the idea of sending her a Kindle. I can do that, then she can pick out what she likes. I LOOOOOVE my Kindle.

Maybe we could take up a small collection to get her one or maybe someone has an extra. I got one for Christmas and I have downloaded about 40 things and have not had to pay for any.

I happened across this post and think I may be able to help, at least to some extent. I run a Facebook page, soon expanding into a website and non-profit that is dedicated to those in the kidney transplant community. Part of what I do is teach people HOW to look for living kidney donors and how to find a transplant center with a shorter wait time. I help provide information to those interested in finding out more about donating a kidney, and if they decide that they would like to give the gift of life to someone support and assist them through that process. I also occasionally pair donors and recipients. We have a community there that consist of past and future living kidney donors (yes we do celebrate a lot of transplant anniversaries), past and future transplant recipients, and their friends and families.

I do feel that I should let you know that as a type A she can accept both A and O donors. If she has an incompatible but willing donor she may also want to look into paired kidney donation, which would allow her to basically swap donors with another forming 2 matches.

Donors do not need to live in the same area as the recipient and there are programs that will cover airline travel as well as places to stay in many locations.

If you or anyone else that reads this would like more information on living kidney donation or are in need of a transplant you are welcome to email me at kidneywishes@gmail.com or stop by my Kidney Wishes Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/kidneywishes

I hope this helps!!
