It’s not near and dear to me because I’ve needed it, but because I volunteered there for a year. One night a month a group of volunteers (4-5) would go in and make the families (40+) dinner.

If you’re not familiar with how RMDH works, they house families that have children being treated at Children’s Hospital Denver. One of the requirements to be eligible to stay at an RMDH is that your home is more than 60 miles from Children’s. Can you imagine your child needing treatment and the best treatment being over 60 miles away? I hate that there is a need for RMDH, but I celebrate its existence, you know?

I met families from all over the US; Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, West Virginia and there was even one family that was there for over six months. I met families that were able to take their children home and I met families whose children lost their battle. Heartbreaking. They were so appreciative of the meal that we provided them it was humbling to feel their gratitude.

So, just the fact that these families have a sick child is devastating enough imagine having to leave the creature comforts of home in order to do what is best for your child.

12 sara j July 13, 2012 at: We have just had our first baby 3 months ago and so far she has been healthy thank goodness so no we have not had to use them! Recently there was a family in our military community who had to though and I am so thankful that places like that exist!

13 sara j July 13, 2012 at: Well recently becoming a parent has made me realize how precious life is and i wish i could protect every child from harm, that being said I recently started collecting donations for St. Judes Childrens hospital, even asking family members to donate instead of giving me a birthday present. I hope i never have to take my baby girl there but so thankful a place like that exists and i feel like maybe we will have good karma coming our way if we donate to them!

Last year my daughters girl scout troop had The Ronald McDonald house in Denver as their Hometown Hero, so we got to go and deliver cookies and have a tour. It is an awesome charity!!
